In the mood for love

In the mood for love is a Hong Kong movie about love affair released on 20 May 2000. This movie is directed by Wong Kar Wai. The genre of this movie is romantic and it is about two married couple's spouse have a love affair. The woman who her husband cheating on her known as Su Li-Zhen also as Mrs. Chan meanwhile the man who his wife cheating on him known as Chow Mo-Wan also as Mr.Chow. Mrs.Chan work as a secretary in shipping company and Mr.Chow work as a journalist. The era of this movie is on British Hong Kong 1962 which Hong Kong was governed by British. Because of this era, the film got me feeling nostalgia for atmosphere of 60's.

This movie used different angle and technique to give audience different feeling. From the beginning where they found out their spouse cheated on them, the movie didn't exactly tell the audience that their spouse is cheated. They tell the audience in a suggestive way where Mrs. Chan asked Mr. Chow where he bought his tie because her husband had the same tie as him and he claim that his wife bought it for him. Meanwhile Mr. Chow also asked Mrs. Chan where she bought her bag because his wife had the same one. Then she answered her husband bought it to her from overseas. It is very obvious signal from the movie that their spouse is cheated. The scene where it repeated the conversation twice to show us that they are rehearsal to the scene which cause their spouse cheated because Mr. Chow and Mrs. Chan wonder how it happen. But the second time the conversation repeated, Mr. Chow changed the conversation to " one of us have to make a move first ". But the Mrs. Chan claims that her husband wouldn't said that . They continuously met each other even though it is not easy to meet each other without letting anybody know. All this slowly to show how their spouse have an affair meanwhile how Mr.Chow and Mrs.Chan end up have an affair together too. It was a very sad movie because they have to separate due to Mrs.Chan don't want to be the one who leave her husband and Mr.Chow have a job in Singapore. Mrs.Chan went to Singapore to look for Mr.Chow but they still didn't end up together.


"In the mood for love"is about Journalist Mr.Chow and his wife move into a Hong Kong apartment, but Mr.Chow's spouse is often away on business. Mr.Chow makes the acquaintance of the alluring Mrs.Chan,whose own significant other also seems preoccupied with work. As the two friends realize their perspective partners are cheating on them, they begin to fall for each other. However, neither wants to stop to the level of the unfaithful spouses.


In addition, this movie used different ways to tell audience the story. When Mr.Chow is writing story, Mrs.Chan just right behind him. The camera slide from the right of the mirror to the left and then back to the right again. This is to caught their face expression with each other using the reflection of the mirror. For example the scene where the curtain are flutter as the wind blow, it was after Mr.Chow is gone and Mrs.Chan is too late to hold him back. As the curtain flutter which mean the ship has sailed away which mean Mr.Chow has gone to Singapore. From my perspective, the part where Mrs.Chan ended up rent the apartment from Mrs.Suen her previous landlord. She moved in with her son and I guess she had that children with Mr.Chow but she doesn't want to bother his life so she chose to raise and live with her son alone. Besides, the whole movie keep using the same background music to show that their life is just repeating, everyday is the same.

In conclusion, this is a great movie that reflect what happen in real life. The costume, lighting, color of every scene and the actor brought out the feeling very nicely. Although this movie is about cheating but it never show kissing scene neither sex scene. But the actor still can bring out the feeling to me. All the costume and the acting skill very elegant and sexy with the background music.
